Better Than Silver? MI Couple Discover Lottery Loophole, Made $26 Million Legally!

Illustrated older couple holding a calculator and notepad before a pile of cash, with '$26 Million From the Lottery' text.

A retired Michigan couple used basic arithmetic to legally extract $26 million from the lottery.

No hacking.
No inside information.
No cheating.
Just math.

Jerry and Marge Selbee were high-school sweethearts who ran a convenience store for decades.
When they retired, Jerry (a former math teacher) noticed something most people missed in certain state lottery games:
When the jackpot didn’t get hit, the money “rolled down” into lower prize tiers.

At that point, the expected value flipped positive. Buying enough tickets turned the game into a near-guaranteed profit machine.

Jerry calculated that investing roughly $1,100 could return about $1,900. So they started small… then scaled.

They formed a little corporation, brought in family and friends, and eventually drove 900 miles round-trip to Massachusetts to keep the edge alive after Michigan shut their game down.

They spent hours every day sorting tickets by hand.

Over nine years they pulled in $26 million gross ($8 million+ profit after taxes and costs).

The Boston Globe eventually noticed the same group kept winning.
Investigators looked into it.

Result? Completely legal.
The states still made tens of millions in extra ticket sales.

An MIT student group independently found the same loophole and did the exact same thing.

In 2011 the games were finally changed and the window closed.

Jerry and Marge didn’t buy yachts or flashy cars. They paid for education for their kids and grandkids, fixed up their house, and stayed in the same quiet Michigan town.

The system was designed so the house always wins.
Two ordinary people simply refused to play the way the house expected.

There’s a movie about them (Jerry & Marge Go Large) now, but the original 60 Minutes piece is even better.

Watch it here:

Sometimes the smartest way to beat the system… is just to actually understand it.
