Jewelry stocks slipped on cue.
Gold imports rose more than 24 percent to that record dollar figure even as volumes eased. Indian Families were not buying because a YouTuber told them to.
They were buying because the paper in their pocket keeps shrinking and wedding jewelry is the oldest Indian hedge that does not require a broker’s password.
The same state that lectures households about “unnecessary” metal is not emptying the RBI’s vaults. Central banks worldwide have been stacking physical gold while telling the public that Treasuries and bank deposits are civilization.
India telling its own people to stand down while the import bill screams demand is not a spiritual awakening. It is a forex problem wearing a khadi jacket.
Here is the pattern gold bugs never forget. When a politician needs your rupees in the banking system, gold becomes a social vice. When the same system needs reserves, gold becomes a strategic asset.Modi first ran this appeal in May, asking for a year off gold amid energy shocks and reserve pressure. He is repeating it in September because the first sermon did not work. If moral persuasion had killed Indian gold demand, he would not have to film the reel twice.
Not because a prime minister is running a cartoon cabal.
Because incentives do not lie. A 15 percent import duty and tighter rules already tried to ration the metal. Households still bid. That is not “waste.”
That is a vote against the currency. Growth of 7.8 percent and a gold strike happening at the same time is not a contradiction. It is a country that can produce GDP prints and still not trust the unit those prints are measured in.
Swadeshi, taken seriously, would mean Indian mines, Indian refining, and Indian households holding Indian metal. It would not mean talking people out of the savings vehicle their grandparents used when banks froze, inflation ran, and five-year plans arrived late. “Wed in India” is a tourism slogan.“Do not buy gold” is a request that private savings stay in assets the state can tax, freeze, or inflate. The conspiratorial read is simpler than a secret society. Paper needs believers. Gold does not. When the man who manages the political machine that depends on the rupee tells 1.4 billion people the yellow metal is optional, treat it the way traders treat a central banker who says the currency is strong: as confirmation that the bid is already there. Buy what they are asking you not to buy. Small bars. Coins. Recycled jewelry if that is what the market offers. Do it legally, pay the duty, and ignore the lecture.
The import number they are frightened of is the household sector doing what officialdom does with its own reserves: getting out of other people’s promises.
Modi will call it self-reliance. The vault does not care what he calls it.It only cares who still holds the metal when the next speech arrives. This is opinion, not investment advice. Gold can fall. Governments can raise duties again. The point is not a ticker. The point is that when the state begs the public to stop buying the oldest money on the subcontinent, the public should ask who benefits if they obey.
