How to read these figures
- Primary sources: every figure is the company's own, cited to the release or filing it came from.
- Fixed cohorts: the companies in each median are set for the calendar year, so a median never moves because membership moved.
- No modelled costs: no cost or margin here is estimated by us; where a company states no figure, the page says so.
About Rio Tinto plc
Rio Tinto's Copper group has operations in Chile, Mongolia and the United States, and its Iron Ore operations are in Western Australia and Canada. Aluminium & Lithium combines aluminium operations in the Pacific and Atlantic regions with lithium operations and growth projects in Argentina, Canada and Chile. The company moved from 4 product groups to 3, bringing Aluminium and Lithium together. Its Borates and Iron & Titanium businesses were placed under strategic review during 2025. Rio Tinto describes its mission as making it the "most valued metals and mining business". Rio Tinto reported Pilbara iron ore production of 327.3 million tonnes on a 100% basis and copper production of 883 thousand tonnes on a consolidated basis. Bauxite production was 62.4 million tonnes and aluminium production was 3,380 thousand tonnes, both Rio Tinto's share, and lithium production was 57 thousand tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent, of which 46 thousand tonnes was attributable to Rio Tinto. In March, the company completed the acquisition of Arcadium Lithium plc. In June, it opened the Western Range iron ore mine in Australia, developed with joint venture partner China Baowu Group. In December, the first shipment of iron ore from Simandou left Guinea. Ramp-up of the Oyu Tolgoi underground mine in Mongolia delivered a record copper production increase of 61% year on year. Rio Tinto had an average of 61,000 employees for the year, working across 34 countries on 6 continents. Rio Tinto has a dual corporate structure of Rio Tinto plc and Rio Tinto Limited.
Costs and margins
Rio Tinto plc states 'Copper C1 net unit costs' in USc/lb at HY/FY only (H1 2026: NEGATIVE -24.7 USc/lb net of by-product credits incl. Oyu Tolgoi gold); quarterly production releases carry C1 guidance only (verified on the Q2 release); no AISC rather than a consolidated all-in sustaining cost, so its figure is shown as stated and is not compared with the cohort. How to read this page
Costs are the company's own consolidated all-in sustaining cost (gold, silver) or C1 cash cost (copper), as stated, on the basis the company states; the reference price is the quarter's average from World Bank Commodity Price Data (CC BY 4.0); the margin is that price less the stated cost, a production-cost spread and not company net profit; financials are as filed in the filing currency, never converted; report dates are confirmed from the company's notice or estimated from its own past pattern and say which. The full methodology is on the Miner Margins page.
