How to read these figures
  • Primary sources: every figure is the company's own, cited to the release or filing it came from.
  • Fixed cohorts: the companies in each median are set for the calendar year, so a median never moves because membership moved.
  • No modelled costs: no cost or margin here is estimated by us; where a company states no figure, the page says so.

About Vale SA

Vale SA produces iron ore and copper in the Carajás region. Its iron ore mines, all open pit, are concentrated in the Southeastern, Southern and Northern Systems in Brazil. Vale also produces iron ore pellets in Brazil and Oman, directly and through joint ventures. Vale conducts its copper operations primarily through its subsidiaries Salobo Metais S.A. in Brazil and Vale Canada Limited in Canada. Vale also conducts integrated nickel operations on a global scale. Copper concentrates from the Salobo and Sossego mines in Carajás, in the Brazilian state of Pará, contain gold, and Salobo also contains silver. Vale has sold Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. 75% of the by-product gold contained in concentrate from the Salobo copper mine in Brazil for the life-of-mine and 70% of the by-product gold from the Sudbury nickel mines in Canada for 20 years. Samarco is a joint venture equally owned by Vale and BHP Billiton Brasil Ltda.; its Fundão tailings dam failed in November 2015. On January 25, 2019, a tailings dam failed at Vale's Córrego do Feijão mine in the city of Brumadinho, state of Minas Gerais, resulting in 270 fatalities. In September 2025, Vale completed the sale of a 70% interest in Aliança Geração de Energia S.A. to Global Infrastructure Partners for US$871 million.

Costs and margins

Vale SA states Quarterly USD copper unit COGS and 'Copper all-in costs' NET-NEGATIVE per TONNE (2Q26 US$-257/t; 1Q26 US$-642/t), USD and quarterly but per tonne, zero per-pound usage in either quarterly release; guidance also per tonne rather than a consolidated all-in sustaining cost, so its figure is shown as stated and is not compared with the cohort. How to read this page

Costs are the company's own consolidated all-in sustaining cost (gold, silver) or C1 cash cost (copper), as stated, on the basis the company states; the reference price is the quarter's average from World Bank Commodity Price Data (CC BY 4.0); the margin is that price less the stated cost, a production-cost spread and not company net profit; financials are as filed in the filing currency, never converted; report dates are confirmed from the company's notice or estimated from its own past pattern and say which. The full methodology is on the Miner Margins page.
